As people grow older, their hair and nails start to change. In this blog we will see the changes as you grow older.

Hair Colour – One of the most common signs of ageing is your hair colour. Melanin is a pigment that causes hair colour, which hair follicles produce. As your age, your hair follicles produce less of this Melanin and that causes for your hair to turn grey. Scalp hair often starts greying at the temples and extends to the top of the scalp. Hair colour becomes lighter, eventually turning white. Body and facial hair also turns grey, but most often, this happens later than scalp hair. Hair in the armpit, chest, and pubic area may grey less or not at all. Greying is largely determined by your genes. Nutritional supplements, vitamins, and other products will not stop or decrease the rate of greying.

Thickness of hair -How much hair you have on your body and head is also determined by your genes. Nearly everyone has some hair loss with aging. The rate of hair growth also slows. Hair strands become smaller and have less pigment. So the thick, coarse hair of a young adult eventually becomes thin, fine, light-coloured hair. Many hair follicles stop producing new hairs. Men tend to start showing signs of balding in their 20s to 30s, then most men are nearly bald by their 60s. However, some people can go bald earlier. These are some of the reasons:

  • Male pattern baldness
  • Alopecia Areata
  • Stress
  • Illness
  • Medication

Women also have similar causes of hair loss. Women loss their hair at a later stage of their life but there is still an increase as they get older. There are similar causes of hair loss in women:

  • Female Pattern Baldness
  • Alopecia Areata
  • Stress
  • Pregnancy
  • Illness
  • Medication
  • Hormones

Changes in Nails – Your nails also change with age, here’s how:

  • They grow more slowly and may become dull and brittle
  • They may also become yellowed and opaque
  • Nails, particularly toenails, may become hard and thick
  • Ingrown toenails may be more common
  • The tips of the fingernails may break
