There are 2 new treatments and solutions that have been rising in popularity over the last 5 years - we are talking about Platlet Rich Plasma (PRP) and Scalp Micro Pigmentation (SMP).

Platlet Rich Plasma (PRP)
Lets start with Platlet Rich Plasma! PRP is also commonly known as the “vampire” treatment or “vampire facial”. It's use as a facial treatment is what first brought it into the public eye. Now PRP for hair loss is an increasingly popular option and alternative to the mainline medications. The PRP process starts by blood being extracted. The blood is then spun in a centrifuge at high speed. This process separates the plasma in your blood from the red blood cells. The plasma in your blood is rich in white blood cells and other growth factors important for hair growth.

Now that the platlet rich plasma has been extracted from the rest of the blood, it can be use to regenerate hair follicles. The growth factors in the plasma signals skin cells to function and in this case promotes an increased level of activity in the cells that grow the hair follicles. To do this, the plasma is re-injected into the scalp in areas of thinning. The injection process can be a painful process and therefore it can be done under local anaesthetic to ease the discomfort.

There are no side effects other than some bruising and discomfort, however the jury is still out on how effective PRP can be as a hair loss treatment. Depending on the doctor and clinic that you visit, the recommendation on how often you should have a PRP treatment differs between every 4-6 months. There are ongoing studies to find out just how effective PRP can be and the best method of applying the treatment.

Scalp Micro Pigmentation (SMP)
Our second hair loss solution is Scalp Micro Pigmentation (SMP). SMP is a non-surgical cosmetic solution that involves tattooing thousands of tiny dots onto the scalp. SMP creates the look of a close buzz cut hairstyle or prevents the show through of the scalp if you keep your hair longer. Hair loss is noticeable when there is a contrast of colours between the scalp and the hair. If you can cut down this contrast of colour, then hair loss becomes a lot less noticeable.

Over the last 2 years, SMP has really exploded as a mainstream solution for hair loss, especially for men looking to shave their head. SMP is classed as a permanent treatment, but over time the tattoo’s can fade and will need to be topped up. Sunlight is one of the main causes of tattoo fading. SMP is a great option for all forms of hair loss including Alopecia Areata or wide hair partings. While currently marketed mainly to the male market, SMP will continue to increase in popularity as it is marketed to women also.

SMP is a great way to conceal your hair loss, while you continue to use other treatments to thicken your actual hair. SMP and PRP can be used with any hair loss treatment or cosmetic solution to create the hair look that you are after.

Prevention Options
It’s easier to keep the hair that you have rather than try to grow it back. Therefore, it’s important to catch hair loss as early as possible and seek treatment right away. Once your hair follicle has died, sadly there is no cure.
