There are a few treatments that say they help treat hair loss, but how many of them actually work?

Minoxidil –

Minoxidil solution and foam are used to help hair growth in the treatment of male pattern baldness. It is not used for baldness at the front of the scalp or receding hairline in men.  This rejuvenates and increases the blood flow around shrunken hair follicles, causing them to increase in size and thicken. It also extends each follicle’s growth phase to encourage hair regrowth.

Finasteride –

Finasteride prevents the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. DHT is involved in the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Finasteride is used to treat male pattern hair loss in men. It is also used to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate. The hairs will then shed and you’ll begin to lose hair faster than it can grow causing thinning hair and in most cases a receding hairline. Finasteride works by blocking the enzyme that causes the conversion of testosterone to DHT.

Hair-boosting shampoos –

A good shampoo will remove the dirt and cleanse the scalp; it will deep cleanse each hair strand. If you don’t regularly clean your hair then a build-up of dirt can damage your hair and scalp, your scalp can become itchy. Poor hair and scalp health can lead to hair loss. Shampoos often contain Sulphates to help clean, as they are a very effective detergent. Quite a few people don’t have any problems with the sulphate in their shampoo; however shampoos that don’t include sulphate are a lot kinder on the hair and scalp. If you have already started to experience thinning hair then sulphates may make the problem worse. Whilst cheap shampoos are alright for some people, sulphates weaken hair follicles making hair brittle and prone to breakages. If you have sensitive skin Sulphates can also be harmful to the scalp or if used over a long period of time it can cause aggravation and itching.

If you want to a shampoo that helps fight hair loss, HairMax have their own shampoothat cleanses your hair without the harsh effects of sulfates that strip essential oils.

Hair Loss Supplements –

There are many vitamins, plant extracts and herbal supplements advertised to help healthy hair growth. These supplements will only help hair growth if you are lacking in any of the vitamins or nutrients to begin with.

Supplements or vitamins related to hair growth include:

  • Iron - If your iron levels are too low (anaemia), less iron is supplied to your hair follicles disrupting your hair growth cycle and causing hair loss in some people. Raise your iron count by taking supplements or eating red meat, fish, lentils, spinach, or green vegetables.
  • vitamin A, B, D and E -
  • zinc
  • Amino acids - They help the body to produce keratin and grow hair. Amino acids are found in protein-rich foods like meat, eggs, and dairy products.
  • omega acids (especially omega-3 fatty acids) - such as omega-3, are important fats that are not produced by the body itself. Omega-3 acids provide the necessary oils that keep your scalp healthy and hydrated. They can be found in oily fish, avocado, and pumpkin seeds.
