Thinning Hair: Can You Restore Its Former Glory?
Hair thinning can be a blow to your confidence, leaving you wondering if thicker locks are a thing of the past. In the previous segment, we explored how addressing the cause of thinning early can promote some regrowth. But can you truly regain the hair density you once had? In this part of our interview with trichologist Iain, we delve into the realities of hair restoration.
Hair Fibres: A Cosmetic Fix
Iain acknowledges hair fibres as a cosmetic solution for creating the appearance of thicker hair. These products can be helpful for achieving a fuller look, but it's important to remember that they don't address the underlying cause of thinning or stimulate new hair growth.
The Science of Hair Miniaturisation
When hair starts to thin, it undergoes a process called miniaturization. The hair follicles themselves shrink, leading to finer, weaker hairs. Iain explains that once miniaturization occurs due to hormonal or genetic factors, it's not possible to reverse the process and make those individual hairs grow thicker again.
Promoting New Growth: A Strategy Shift
However, there's still hope! Hair follicles typically grow hairs in clusters of two, three, or even four. With thinning, these clusters often dwindle down to just one hair per follicle. The key lies in stimulating the follicles back into producing those multiple hairs.
By promoting new growth and encouraging these clusters to return to their natural state, your hair can appear thicker overall. This doesn't involve thickening the existing miniaturized hairs, but rather encouraging the growth of additional, healthier strands.
The Road to Thicker Hair: Stay Tuned for Solutions
In the following parts of our interview series, we'll explore how trichologists diagnose hair loss and uncover potential solutions. We'll also discuss innovative tools like HairMax low-level laser therapy (LLLT) devices and their role in promoting hair growth and potentially increasing hair density.
