Hair loss in men and women happens to so many people, we forget that it can also happen in the younger generation.  Their hair loss can be both sudden and progressive. Younger generation hair loss can be caused by many and varied reasons, but can be easily identified and treated. For parents and teenagers alike, hair loss can be a frustrating and even though the hair loss in teenagers can be temporary, it’s still more common than often thought.

Here are some of the most common causes of hair loss in teenagers –

  • Ringworm
  • Telogen Effluvium
  • Traction Alopecia

Ringworm –

This cause is often easy to recognise as it leaves red circular lesions that may be itchy and/or scaly. Your doctor and pharmacist will be able to detect and treat the ringworm, so it’s best to visit your GP once you notice these signs.

Telogen Effluvium –

In teenagers this type of hair loss is usually caused after a serious illness or trauma, or at periods of high stress, and may be accompanied by weight loss. Often hair comes out in clumps, resulting in the hair becoming noticeably thinner, even significantly patchy. The condition usually reverses itself and the hair will grow back.

Traction Alopecia –

This is caused when the hair is pulled too tight - this tends to happen in younger women who like braiding or tying their hair. Loosening the hair should help reverse the effects and hair loss products may be useful in encouraging regrowth.
